Old Codger with Courtney T. Edison

Alright so there is a new man in my life. I wonderful old coot, Courtney T. Edison, The Old Codger. He is one of the most amazing personalities at the Jersey radio station WFMU. I first came up on the station from a recommendation from my friend Chris, he was explaining to me that Dj. Rupture had a show on this station as well as some great field recording shows. But when I was browsing podcasts I came upon an all 78 record podcast/radio show and its host, a distinguished man that claims to be 150 years old and stubborn as the mule he rode in on. The only two words I can describe this show with is “classic” and “original” I know those might be to opposing adjectives but the only thing more hypocritical is the Old Codger himself. I need not say anymore, for I feel I may kill the abrasive magic that this young gentlemen host will sway and romance you with. So I will tell you plainly that this is one radio show not to be missed. Also check out some of WFMU’s other shows they all are of extremely unique quality and are not too elitist, as sometimes radio stations and dj’s are.

Joan Didion

Joan Didion, Joan Didion, what can one say about her that she couldn’t put better herself. If you have not read anything by her this is my recommendation to you, and if you have, well then you understand why another person is writing a blog entry on her. Not many people today have such a beautiful and lyrical presence and live in poetic essence as Joan Didion. Some of her prose may seem slow at times but always turns out fruitful, before you know it she has hooked you with her unique pluralistic view of California culture.

If anyone can make you fall in love with California it is Joan Didion

She is Truly Amazing!

Dear Blog, I have not written you in a while, that may be because i have not been inspired to, or i have been working on other projects that involve different kinds of writing. I am glad to be back and am going to start taking you seriously again. I am even going to try and do another podcast soonish.

Charlie Manson’s Human Condition

I have been listening to a lot of Charles Manson’s music lately, mostly the “LIE” album.  Besides being a serial killer who never personally murdered anyone(not to say he is not crazy fucked up but…)he was also an amazing singer songwriter who communicated themes of the human condition better than a lot of other pop culture living musicians. His music may take poetic leaps at times but mostly I feel there is a directness to the images and juxtapositions he reproduces in his music. when I tell people about his music I usually get the argument that I am supporting a murderer. I can see this to a point, although I am not directly baking him a cake with a file in it.  Mostly I feel I am creating awareness of music that is important for a well-rounded culture.  I mean should his music be ignored because he is a serial killer? Does that make any sense to the progression of arts and culture?I guess my point is that a bad man can do good things. Here are some little diddys to play us out. Until next time my dear friends this is Danny signing out.

The Human Instrument or How I learned to love Bobby Mcferrin

Watch these videos and just try not to fall in love with his music too…

André Cadere; Walking With Barres

So my friend Jefferson turned me on to this artist André Cadere. I am really amazed with his work dealing with these poles which he calls “Barres”. The Idea is that he is always carrying around these works and would sometimes leave them in art spaces or at least hold them in the exhibition and social spaces. He is a mobile exhibition space for these works, this is my primary interest in the work. I mean the “Barres” are really beautiful too but I like where his sculpture medium meets this type of performance. What the Frieze article covers that I like is when they talk about how this work and artist is problematic for institutions (which isn’t that much, but it’s noted). It begs the question how does one participate in these institutions and not be held down by their capitalistic politics.
